The Ensemble Theatre has asked director Iain Sinclair, who brought Arthur Miller’s play A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE, a little while ago, to the Ensemble Theatre,  after its initial ‘life’ at the Old Fitz in Woolloomooloo, to a vivid rendering, to revive THE CARETAKER, by Harold Pinter, for us. THE CARETAKER had its first production in 1960 at the Arts Theatre Club, in London, and was transferred to the Duchess Theatre in the West End and ran for 444 performances. It is a one act work of about 90 minutes length and it focuses on a remarkable scientist Dr Rosalind Franklin (Amber McMahon), leading a team of male comrades in the investigation into the “secret of life” using x-ray crystallography to reveal the atomic structure of DNA – the famed Double Helix. HONOUR, by Joanna Murray-Smith, is a ‘war-horse’ in the canon of Australian Dramatic Literature, for we have seen several productions of this play over the years since its inaugural production in 1995 at the Playbox in Melbourne. Kate Champion is the Director of this present offering. Ms Murray-Smith in her program notes talks fondly of this play and suggests it may be the best of her work. OUTDATED is a new Australian work written and directed by the Artistic Director of the Theatre, Mark Kilmurry. It is a simple set of sketches that begin with a middle aged couple meeting to date over the internet. We follow a 90-minute trajectory of the ups and downs of the relationship. It involves only two characters: Olivia, played competently and breezily by Rachel Gordon and Matt played by Yalin Ozucelik. BABY DOLL, began its life as a film in 1956, written by Tennessee Williams. It was Directed by Elia Kazan as ‘a black comedy’. It was shaped from two one act stage plays by Williams: 27 WAGONS FULL OF COTTON (1945) and THE LONG STAY CUT SHORT or THE UNSATISFACTORY SUPPER (1946). Tennessee Williams adapted the screenplay as a play, himself, under the title TIGER TALE in the 1970’s, but this work at the Ensemble Theatre has been made by Pierre Laville and Emily Mann – long time collaborators at the McCarter Theater Center in Princeton, New Jersey.
